Nintendo Hints at New Hardware - Nintendo NX - & Mobile Games

Nintendo has announced a partnership with the Japanese mobile game company DeNA that will see the creation of mobile video games based in Nintendo IP. The deal, which announced by Satoru Iwata during a press conference in Japan yesterday, will see the development brand new mobile games based around existing IP (as opposed to simple ports of existing handheld games):

"Both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo’s IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices.

To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimised for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system."


During the press conference, Nintendo also hinted at a new hardware platform, codenamed Nintendo NX, although little is known about it at this point. A membership service will also be made available that will work across this new hardware, as well as existing Nintendo platforms, mobile devices, and PC:

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX.” It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service, which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, the new hardware with a brand new concept NX, smart devices and PCs."
