NPD: Video Game Market Grew 3% in April

According to research firm NPD the video game market grew by three percent year-over-year last month. Hardware sales grew by a notable 12 percent. However, revenue dropped by four percent due to the lower price points of hardware.

Mortal Kombat X was the top selling game for the month. 8th generation software sales grew by 200 percent, while 7th generation software sales declined by 62 percent. Portable software sales dropped by 32 percent.

The NPD Group's Liam Callahan said the following:

"Overall sales across hardware, new physical software, and accessories in April 2015 grew by 3 percent over April 2014 due to the strength of new physical software sales, which offset losses from hardware and accessories.

On a unit basis, hardware sales grew by 12 percent. Declines in hardware dollar sales were due to a decrease in average price of 4 per cent, due to a drop in console hardware pricing. After 18 months on the market for Xbox One and PS4, we are seeing cumulative hardware sales over 50 percent higher than the combined sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same point in their lifecycles."
