"If u hate to finish a game the next day u buy it, u better not play TW101. I focus on how it is fun, not how long it lasts till the ending."
Such was the Tweet sent out by Hideki Kamiya, the man behind Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta, a few months ago.
Kamiya has recently expanded upon this belief, explaining why he's more concerned with how entertaining a game is to play rather than how long it takes to complete:
"In regards to the action games I've been involved with, I'm more concerned about making a game you can enjoy your whole life, rather than a game you only play through once."
"I have action games that I still play to this day... it's not about seeing the ending, but having fun playing the game. That's the sort of game I'm interested in making, so I'm not into really talking about how long it will take to reach the ending."
So, does this mean that The Wonderful 101 will be a short game? Well, perhaps it'll be shorter than most people will assume but that's not the same as just being short. In fact, Kamiya says that, "In terms of volume, [The Wonderful 101] actually has more than Bayonetta."
It seems that Kamiya's priorities lie in making The Wonderful 101 the sort of thing that can be played again and again, as he hopes players will find new and exciting ways to overcome its many challenges. He elaborates by saying, "I'd like it if people could make discoveries and go, 'Hey, I didn't realize I could do this' in the game and get hooked on it… you could say that the first time through the game is something like the tutorial, and the second time around is the actual game."
The Wonderful 101 will be released in Europe on the 23rd of August, with a Japanese release following the day after. Americans, meanwhile, will have to wait until the 15th of September for Kamiya's latest action extravaganza.
