In the latest in a long series of policy changes regarding the Xbox One, Microsoft has announced that the Kinect sensor, previously stated as necessary for the functioning of the Xbox One, is no longer required. It can be unplugged at any time, and the system will work as normal unless the user opens a game that requires the sensor.
Xbox One chief product officer Marc Whitte, speaking to IGN, also revealed that almost all of the functions of the Kinect can be disabled whilst it is still plugged in: in his words, "Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won’t work," but IR blasting will continue to function unless the Kinect is unplugged.
