Speaking at a GDC conference, Tom Abernathy of Riot Games and Richard Rouse III of Microsoft Game Studios shed light on a few statistics in regards to players completing games via Steam.
These percentages are based on games purchased through Valve and compiled by the number of individual achievements gained during the game:
The Walking Dead: Season 1, Episode 1 - 66%
Mass Effect 2 - 56% ***
BioShock Infinite - 53%
Batman: Arkham City - 47%
Portal - 47%
Mass Effect 3 - 42% ***
The Walking Dead: Season 1, Episode 5 - 39%
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 32%
Borderlands 2 - 30%
This segment was presented in their speech titled "The Death of the Three-Act Structure" which went on to speak about story-telling in games and how developers have a creative freedom over other forms of media such as film and TV.
In terms of the statistics, it would be enlightening to know how the percentages were calculated. If they were based solely on achievements, that could mean players simply have not replayed the games enough to gain 100% completion, and may have in fact played through the main campaign once.
Are achievements important to you? If so, how many times would you replay a game to get 100% completion?
***Note: Mass Effect 3 is not available via Steam. Numbers for Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 possibly came from a Bioware talk at GDC Europe in 2012. We will update this story as facts are checked.
