Hacker Runs DOOM on a Printer

Security researcher Michael Jordon has managed to hack a Canon Pixma printer so that it can run the original DOOM.

The hack took four months to complete and was done in order to demonstrate the security problems that come from devices that make use of accessibilty to the internet. Canon's Pixma range allows users to check the status of their printer online, but apparently it's not very well secured - the interface doesn't even require a username or password.

The reason it took so long, Jordon explains, is that the printer's firmware lacked sufficient functions and therefore a lot of coding and experimentation was necessary before it could work properly.

Sadly, his hack doesn't play the full game and in fact only goes as far as the loading screen. It would take even more work and further optimisation in order to advance beyond that point, but Jordon says that he's proven his point and doesn't feel the need to continue to work on it.

Canon, meanwhile, state that they intend to provide a fix to the weaknesses Jordan identified as quickly as possible.
