Vanish is a pretty hard game. I haven't even beat it yet, but I know some useful tips.
1. Do NOT run. If you run, he will hear you. By running a lot, you will eventually die.
2. Turn back a lot. I have seen this a few times that when I turned back I went immediately to the water pump room or generator room.
3. Glow sticks don't matter. If you turn the brightness up all the way, then it will look the same.
4. Don't hesitate to run away from him. If you see him, he will chase you (he will hear you breathe). And, if he is chasing you, don't hesitate for obvious reasons.
