Strider is a side-scrolling platform/action game. Players control protagonist Strider Hiryu as he navigates the city of Kazakh and overcomes the obstacles and enemies in order to take out the antagonist Grandmaster Meio.
Exploration
The original title was linear, but the reboot will allow for more freedom to explore and discover new weapons and items, similar to Super Metroid and other games in the Metroidvania genre. The traditional level structure has been replaced with a retraceable world that you can go back and explore to find hidden areas at your own leisure.
While the developers were keen to make the gameplay less linear and add in more exploration, the abilities have all been retained due to the popularity of the character of Strider, but with some new ones added for variety.
Combat
Strider will gain access to new weapons and upgrades over the course of the game.
His main weapon is known as the Cypher, a plasma weapon capable of taking several different forms. Upgrades/changes to the Cypher can be found as you explore the city of Kazakh. The upgrades to the Cypher are noted by the color of his scarf, which is now a jet of plasma.
Strider is also equipped with a set of Kunai for longer ranged attacks. You can throw three of them in a spread pattern, or six when powered up, and they can also be upgraded by Cypher upgrades (for example, with the Cypher upgrade 'Reflect' they will bounce off at an angle after their initial hit).
There will be numerous combat options at all stages of gameplay, from standing, running, wall climbing, and hanging to aerial combat.
